Invest SEA Celebrates Indonesia’s National Maritime Day by Inviting Public to Put Attention to Natuna Islands

This September 23, Indonesia celebrates National Maritime Day with the theme “Layar Terkembang Menuju Indonesia Maju”. As an archipelago that is both highly connected to, and dependent on, the marine environment, it is important for Indonesia to recognize the conservation and sovereignty efforts being made across the country, particularly in the Natuna Islands. In a recent Focus Group Discussion organized by Invest SEA, Wahyu Muryadi, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, said, “The Natuna Islands have enormous potential for economic growth & environmental conservation.” One of the other panelists, Rodhial Huda, Deputy Regent of Natuna Islands said, “Natuna’s position is very important for the development of the national region. In addition, Natuna also has a considerable role in economic growth in Indonesia by having large resources & strategic location. This makes Natuna a gateway for the Southeast Asian region.” Although, in addition, many media outlets have reported instability and chaos on Natuna Island, recent field research proves that it is not true. In fact, the government has now established three programs for oil and gas development on Natuna Island, and the island’s journey highlights the importance of balancing economic prosperity with environmental stewardship.
