SPECTRUM: China’s Problematic Map

China released a new version of its national map, as it has done regularly since 2006. New maps are usually released to assert sovereignty or correct past data errors. However, things that China claims, especially about territorial borders, always invite controversy. On the new 2023 map, China claims the Indian states of Arunachal Pradesh and Aksai Chin as its territory. It also includes parts of Malaysia’s maritime territory off Borneo, as well as Taiwan and most of the South China Sea. Beijing’s unilateral claim through the nine-dashed line on the map has been rejected by disturbed countries such as the Philippines, Malaysia and Taiwan. Indonesia has emphasized that it does not recognize the nine-dash line, which has always been China’s justification for claiming an island in the South China Sea. Since 2017, Indonesia has given a new name to the area as the North Natuna Sea.
