The Natuna Dispatch: Native Life on the Islands

In this edition of The Natuna Dispatch, we meet two locals, each offering a glimpse into their lives on the Indonesian archipelago. Cherman is our guide beneath the blue waves of the Natuna Sea – his passion for diving leads tourists through incredibly biodiverse reef systems. Nova educates and inspires children with her knowledge of the Indonesian language, as she cultivates cultural growth among future generations. Cherman and Nova are welcoming ecotourists to explore the wonders of their home, Natuna. With a deep respect for its sanctity, they offer an unforgettable insight into life on the islands – combining tradition with adventure.

Cherman, Diver and Tour Guide

Exploring the waters of Natuna, Cherman has gone beyond merely admiring its beauty; he is actively recording his fascinating encounters with exotic marine species. “During the time I worked as a diving guide, surveying new spots, I always found new things. What makes us a little surprised, [is] we know that Mola-mola fish only exist in Bali and Japan. Apparently they can also be found in Natuna. We have been creating the documentation since 2016 until today. We still need to find and get the best documentation before we publish it. There are so many mysteries of Natuna that haven’t been solved.”

Nova, School Teacher

Nova, a determined junior high school teacher on Pulau Panjang Island, is resolute in her mission to stay ahead of the curve when it comes to educational technology. She strives to learn all she can about new media trends so that her students will benefit from an up-to-date learning experience “As a teacher, I feel challenged,” said Nova. “As a new teacher…I want to learn things I haven’t discovered.”
